Japan Airlines (JAL) has joined forces with US aerospace startup JetZero to support the development of its unconventional Z4 commercial aircraft, a blended-wing-body (BWB) design that resembles a manta ray. The partnership was announced during the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow.

Japan Airlines Partners with JetZero
The Z4 is being developed as a next-generation mid-market passenger aircraft with a planned capacity of around 250 passengers and a range of approximately 5,000 nautical miles. JetZero says the aircraft could deliver a 30–50% improvement in fuel efficiency compared with today's commercial jets.
Japan Airlines to Contribute Operational Expertise
Under the agreement, JAL will work with JetZero on several aspects of the aircraft's development, including flight operations, cabin services, maintenance and ground handling. The airline's experience is expected to help JetZero incorporate practical airline requirements into the aircraft from the earliest stages of its design.
The companies will also examine how the Z4 can be integrated into existing airport infrastructure. This includes evaluating gate operations and ground-handling procedures so that the aircraft can operate efficiently without requiring major airport modifications.
Another area of cooperation will involve maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). JAL and JetZero intend to explore an approved MRO framework that could support reliable aircraft operations and create additional maintenance opportunities once the Z4 enters commercial service.
A Radical Blended-Wing Design
Unlike conventional airliners, which use a cylindrical fuselage attached to separate wings, the Z4 combines the aircraft's fuselage and wings into one integrated lifting surface. JetZero believes this configuration can reduce aerodynamic drag and improve overall efficiency.
The unusual design is intended to provide significant fuel savings while also creating new possibilities for the passenger cabin. JetZero is targeting the aircraft for the middle segment of the commercial aviation market, where airlines require a combination of capacity, range and operating efficiency.
Development and Certification Timeline
JetZero is progressing toward the first flight of a full-scale blended-wing demonstrator, which is targeted for 2027. The demonstrator is being constructed in cooperation with Scaled Composites in Mojave, California. The company is also developing a large manufacturing facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, to support future Z4 production.
JetZero expects the production aircraft to enter commercial service in the early 2030s, subject to successful development, testing and regulatory certification.
Growing Airline Interest
JAL is not the only airline showing interest in the Z4. JetZero has also received support or commitments from airlines including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, easyJet and Gulf Air. Gulf Air recently signed a letter of intent for an undisclosed number of Z4 aircraft, with preferential delivery positions planned for the early 2030s.
JetZero's airline advisory group now includes 17 members, giving the company access to substantial airline expertise as it refines the aircraft's design.
Potential Impact on Commercial Aviation
If JetZero succeeds in bringing the Z4 into commercial service, the aircraft could represent a major departure from the traditional tube-and-wing configuration that has dominated passenger aviation for decades.
